Denny Hanson served as the Ridgewood Pool Manager for 18 years, from 1969 to 1987, but his impact on the Ridgewood community goes far beyond what the words Pool Manager imply. Denny was a teacher both in and outside of the classroom, a mentor, father-figure and friend. He and his wife Jan helped establish the family culture that defines Ridgewood and many of the traditions that continue to this day. Even after they moved to Iowa, Denny and Jan remained attached to Ridgewood and the life-long friendships they made there. They have graciously served on the Honorary Board of the Ed Nebbins Foundation, bringing their years of experience to the efforts to rebuild the pool that they know has had a wonderful impact on the lives of children and families for multiple generations.
Denny passed away , 2022 at the age of 88 after a two-year illness. The Ridgewood Community will miss him greatly. We invite you to read his obituary and with his family’s permission, we share this excerpt:
Throughout his life, Denny demonstrated a love for humanity, a willingness to care for others, and a steadfast devotion to the next generation. Mr. Hanson (as he was known to his students) was a high school science teacher for 38 years including at James Madison Memorial. Teaching high school is a nine-month endeavor, so Denny spent his summer months directing Ridgewood Pool. Under his watchful eye, several generations learned to swim, dozens earned collegiate scholarships in swimming and diving, and a few became national and world-record holders! He was also the first (and of course favorite) boss to the many swim instructors, lifeguards, and pool employees he hired.
Our hearts are with Jan, their children Kristin, Holly, and Justin, and grandchildren. Per the family’s wishes, the Ed Nebbins Foundation is honored to accept donations in Denny’s memory to help rebuild Ridgewood.
